Lionel Scaloni isn’t going anywhere. The man who turned Argentina from perennial heartbreakers into world champions has verbally agreed to a contract extension through 2031, ensuring he’ll be on the touchline when the 2030 World Cup rolls around.

That 2030 tournament isn’t just any World Cup for Argentina. It features centennial celebration matches in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, marking 100 years since the first World Cup was held in Montevideo in 1930.

A quiet deal before a loud tournament

Scaloni has reportedly asked that any formal announcement of the new deal be postponed until after the 2026 World Cup in North America, not wanting contract talk to steal oxygen from tournament preparation.

His previous contract extension came in February 2023, just weeks after lifting the trophy in Qatar. That deal locked him in through the 2026 cycle. This new agreement pushes the timeline four more years, giving the Argentine Football Association the long-term stability it has craved for decades.
