Childline KZN often sees an increase in calls and referrals during school holiday periods as children lose access to some of the support structures provided by schools.
While school holidays are often a time for children to rest, play and spend time with family, they can also place vulnerable children at increased risk, according to Childline KwaZulu-Natal.
Adeshini Naicker, director of Childline KZN, said the organisation often sees an increase in calls and referrals during school holiday periods as children lose access to some of the support structures provided by schools.
“While school provides children with structure, supervision, and access to trusted adults, holidays can leave some children more vulnerable. Children spend more time at home or in the care of extended family members, neighbours, or older siblings, which can increase their exposure to unsafe situations,” she explained.
For some children, school is also a place of safety and support.
