Laja Adeoye, the Lagos State governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), has called on Nigeria’s political leaders to embrace the ideals of Herbert Heelas Macaulay, saying the country’s democracy requires principled leadership, strategic collaboration and commitment to the national interest ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Adeoye made the call on the occasion of the 80th remembrance ceremony of Herbert Macaulay held in Lagos on Sunday, where he described the late nationalist as a towering figure whose legacy continues to shape Nigeria’s democratic journey.
In a statement on Sunday, the APM governorship candidate said Macaulay’s life remains a powerful reminder that leadership should be rooted in service, courage and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people.
According to him, Macaulay’s contributions extended beyond partisan politics to include advocacy for constitutional reforms, press freedom and greater participation of indigenous Nigerians in governance during the colonial era.
“A trailblazer in every sense, his bold activism against colonial rule, tireless advocacy for the rights of Nigerians and visionary leadership laid critical foundations for the independence movement that would eventually birth our nation,” Adeoye said.
