Some of the Malawian nationals are awaiting repatriation in Johannesburg.
The Joburg Crisis Alliance (JCA) has issued an urgent appeal to the City of Johannesburg and national government, warning that a humanitarian crisis is rapidly unfolding in South Hills as a growing number of Malawian nationals await voluntary repatriation amid rising anti-migrant tensions.
The alliance said the situation has reached a critical stage, with civil society organisations struggling to provide food, shelter and basic humanitarian assistance while government intervention remains limited.
“The Joburg Crisis Alliance calls on the City of Johannesburg and national authorities to intervene urgently to prevent a humanitarian crisis involving Malawian nationals gathered in South Hills,” the organisation said.
According to the alliance, the migrants have gathered in the area while waiting to be repatriated to Malawi. However, delays in securing cross-border transport permits and logistical arrangements have left many stranded, heightening concerns about their safety.
