Baghdad, June 28 (EFE).- Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Sunday that only Tehran is responsible for restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz to pre-war levels, warning that any outside intervention would delay the reopening of the strategic waterway and further escalate tensions. Speaking alongside Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein in Baghdad, Araqchi said that, under a memorandum of understanding, Iran is responsible for managing the strait and that maritime operations will return to normal 30 days after the agreement. «Responsibility for these matters lies with the Iranian side, and no other country has any responsibility, in accordance with the memorandum,» he said. Araqchi warned that «any intervention or separate or new measures will further complicate the situation, delay the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and increase tensions.» «The incidents and clashes that occurred during the last two nights in the Strait of Hormuz are proof of this,» he added. The Iranian foreign minister urged «all parties» to respect the memorandum of understanding, signed electronically by Washington and Tehran on June 17, which includes the reopening of the strategic maritime route, and to refrain from interfering in its implementation or management. Araqchi also referred to the US strikes launched over the weekend against Iranian territory in response to Iran’s actions against two vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation, Iran launched attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait, two Gulf states that have been particularly affected by the conflict since the start of the war. Iran shares control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz with Oman. Before the conflict, the waterway carried about one-fifth of the world’s oil exports, along with other energy products and fertilizers, with more than 100 vessels transiting it each day. Oman has publicly opposed the introduction of transit fees in the strait while working with Iran on future arrangements for navigation. Earlier this week, Muscat announced the opening of a temporary maritime corridor for all vessels free of charge, citing the principle of freedom of navigation. EFE ah-sr-ash-ijm-sk
