“It is shameful that Belgian authorities are rolling out the red carpet for this administration... while US policies are wreaking havoc worldwide"
The 250th anniversary of US independence will be celebrated in Brussels’ Cinquantenaire Park on Sunday. The large invite-only event, organised by the US embassy in Belgium, has drawn widespread criticism.
On the morning of the celebrations, Greenpeace unveiled a 600m2 banner on Brussels’ Grand Place in the city centre to protest the event. In a press release, the environmental activists denounced the use of the anniversary for the political and corporate agenda of US President Donald Trump.
“It is shameful that Belgian authorities are rolling out the red carpet for this administration in the heart of Europe, while US policies are wreaking havoc worldwide,” said Joeri Thijs, member of Greenpeace Belgium.
The event has led to the closure of the park, located close to the EU institutions and the surrounding embassies, over the weekend. Some streets nearby are also shut down due to security concerns surrounding the high-level event on Sunday evening.
