Sir Keir Starmer will scrap plans to replace the Royal Navy’s ageing destroyers and frigates on favour of funding drones in his delayed and controversial defence investment plan (Dip).
Up to eight Type 83 destroyers and five Type 32 frigates will not be included in the Dip which is expected to be unveiled on Tuesday, The Times reports.
New Defence Secretary, Dan Jarvis, has secured between £1-1.5bn more for the plan which is now estimated to total £15bn, although less than the £28bn his predecessor, John Healey who resigned over the funding, said was required.
Over £500m will be committed to the UK’s elite Commandos who will be equipped with new high-speed boats and the latest drone and autonomous technology.
