Eddie Jones’ powerful England team was in town and tipped to beat a shaky Springbok side that remained bereft of confidence after the unfortunate era under Allister Coetzee.
The new coach, Erasmus, had taken over the reins and lost his first match, an exhibition game in Washington against Wales the week before.
