Wout Weghorst is heading back to familiar territory. Ajax confirmed on June 27, 2026, that the Dutch international striker has left the club and signed a two-year contract with FC Twente, marking the end of a two-season stint in Amsterdam.
How we got here
Weghorst joined Ajax in August 2024 after departing Burnley, signing a deal that ran through June 2026. When that contract reached its natural endpoint, neither party pushed for an extension, and Ajax issued a formal farewell thanking him for his contributions across the two seasons he spent at the club.
Weghorst is 33 now. His choice of FC Twente represents a return to a club where he previously played and developed before moving into the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg, then onto Burnley, Besiktas, Manchester United on loan, and eventually Hoffenheim before landing at Ajax.
