A Polokwane man who nearly drowned at St James tidal pool earlier this month is recovering after a swift rescue involving swimmers, medically trained bystanders and emergency services.
According to Cape Argus, Victor Lefoka was pulled from the deep end of the tidal pool on the morning of June 9 after being seen in distress in the water. He had arrived at St James shortly after getting off a train and later said conditions changed quickly once he entered the pool.
“I went down and tried to get back up. I guess I must have panicked,” he said. “Everything was happening very fast.”
Lefoka said he lost consciousness during the incident and later woke up in hospital. He recalled regaining awareness at around 1.41pm, several hours after the rescue effort, which began shortly after 8am.
