An Arizona police officer is facing charges after allegedly beating and punching a pregnant woman in late 2025. The officer, identified as Carri Carrico of the Buckeye Police Department, is headed to trial after being charged in May, 2026 with aggravated assault in connection with use-of-force incidents. Carrico allegedly assaulted the nine-month-pregnant woman, who had been arrested for alleged reckless driving on November 1, 2025, NPR and PEOPLE reported, citing a probable cause statement. She was placed on unpaid leave following her indictment. “On November 1, 2025, at about 2121 hours, Buckeye Police Officer Carri Carrico #5872 arrested V001 for reckless driving. V001 was transported to the Buckeye Police Department located at 100 N. Apache Road, Buckeye, Arizona for booking. V001 was handcuffed with her hands behind her back prior to being placed into the rear compartment of the patrol vehicle andremained handcuffed after arriving at the police station,” the statement read.What did body cam footage revealThe statement also revealed that video recordings from Carrico's Axon body worn camera and the interior surveillance camera show that during efforts to restrain the woman to the bench, the police officer shoved her forward and she “reacted by grabbing officer Carrico's hand while still handcuffed behind her back.”The officer pulled out her right hand and punched the pregnant woman on the right side of the face with her right hand. She was handcuffed behind her back when she was struck. Carrico then secured her to the bench without further incident.Cop faces chargesCarri Carrico, who resigned from the Buckeye Police Department in June 2026, was indicted by a grand jury on May 27, 2026, on two counts of aggravated assault linked to “two separate use-of-force incidents,” according to a statement from Buckeye Police Chief Robert Sanders. Following the indictment, Carrico was placed “on leave without pay as our Professional Standards Unit finalizes administrative investigations into the two incidents,” the statement said. She pleaded not guilty during her arraignment earlier this week, and her trial is scheduled for November.Woman suffered contusion during the encounter with officerSecurity footage obtained by ABC 15 reportedly shows the officer signaling for the woman to sit down, which she does. The video then cuts to a moment where the officer suddenly, and seemingly without provocation, forcefully pushes the woman against a wall, shoves her into a corner, and then pulls her back out.After seating the woman, whose shirt had shifted upward and exposed her pregnant stomach, Carrico is seen striking her in the head. According to ABC 15, the pregnant woman suffered a contusion during the encounter and later told police she had bruises and scratches across her body.Investigators were allegedly told by Carrico that she had “reverted” to her training during the incident. In an internal memo cited by the outlet, her supervisor described Carrico’s conduct as “very aggressive.” Carrico has pleaded not guilty, according to ABC 15.
