A former North Carolina police officer is facing an assault charge after he was captured on a doorbell video camera punching a woman multiple times while attempting to arrest her.Karson Blake Hyder, 22, was charged with one count of misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury over the May 29 arrest, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations. Hyder, a former Shelby Police Department officer, turned himself in on June 1 and was released on a $10,000 secured bond, the bureau announced on social media."The SBI initiated this investigation following a request from the Shelby Police chief and the Cleveland County district attorney," the bureau said. "The investigation examined an allegation of excessive use of force."Hyder was caught on video throwing Cherrie Moore, 34, to the ground and punching her multiple times before another officer intervened. The video quickly went viral and sparked protests in uptown Shelby with people calling for the termination and arrest of Hyder.Shelby Police Chief Brad Fraser announced the officer involved in the incident, whom he did not identify, was terminated on May 30 during a press conference at Shelby's city hall. Fraser condemned the officer's actions, calling them "disturbing and inappropriate.""This has been a very difficult time in our community and I just want to lay my heart and thanks to all those that have come together, those in this room," Mayor Stan Anthony said. "This is an example of how a community can move forward when we have a terrible situation arise." Video shows officer punching woman 10 timesThe video begins with Moore saying, "I don't have a warrant," before Hyder quickly pulls her to the ground. She repeats that she doesn't have a warrant and asks, "what are you doing?" as he punches her several times.Another officer intervenes and repeatedly says "let go" and "I've got her" as the Hyder continues to punch Moore. The final blow lands as the woman's arms are being held back before the second officer pulls her away and the two men bring her to her feet.During the incident, Moore says she needs her medication and asks for mental health care. The video ends with Moore asking, "Excuse me, can you call the crisis center and my daddy?"Woman charged, injured after viral arrest videoOn May 29, Moore unlawfully entered a building, then resisted Hyder by fleeing on foot as he was attempting to arrest her for breaking and entering, according to a warrant for her arrest. Hyder is listed as the complainant.The warrant goes on to say she assaulted Hyder "by grabbing and ripping" his uniform.Moore was charged with resisting a public officer, assault on a government official and breaking and entering. On Sept. 9, 2025, Moore pleaded guilty to resisting a public officer. A second charge of breaking and entering connected to the same encounter on Aug. 15, 2025 was dismissed. Hyder is listed as the complainant.
