Actor, Olatayo Amokade, popularly known as Ijebu, speaks with TEMITOPE ADETUNJI about his career, fame, industry dynamics and the values that guide his life
You are widely known for your comic roles in movies. Do you embrace being identified primarily as a comic actor, or do you sometimes worry that it could limit how people perceive your range as an actor?
I don’t see it as a limitation. In fact, comedy has helped me a great deal and contributed immensely to where I am today. It has opened doors for me rather than closed them.
Comedy is an important aspect of filmmaking. Even when producers and writers sit together to develop a screenplay, they understand that audiences need moments of relief. You cannot have a film that is intense from beginning to end without giving viewers opportunities to breathe, laugh, and reconnect emotionally.
That is why, even in international productions, you often find comic elements woven into serious stories. Comedy helps balance emotions and sustain people’s attention. It reminds audiences that life itself contains different shades of experiences.
