The death toll from the devastating twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela earlier this week has risen to 920, as rescue teams continue desperate efforts to locate survivors beneath collapsed buildings across the South American country.
The latest casualty figure was announced on Friday by National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez during a televised address, marking a sharp increase from the previously confirmed 589 deaths.
The powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck northern Venezuela less than a minute apart on Wednesday, leaving widespread destruction in their wake and flattening homes, public buildings and critical infrastructure.
Rodriguez also announced the deployment of additional military personnel to the coastal state of La Guaira, one of the worst-hit areas, where rescue workers have been racing against time to pull survivors from the rubble.
