The average pension in Bulgaria is projected to reach 543 euros in 2026, marking an increase of about 45 euros compared to the previous year, according to Labor and Social Policy Minister Natalia Efremova.

Speaking ahead of a meeting of the Supervisory Board of the National Social Security Institute (NSSI), where the draft budget of the State Social Security system for 2026 was discussed, Efremova said the rise will result from a planned 7.8% adjustment of all pensions starting July 1.

She also highlighted that the draft budget includes measures aimed at curbing the shadow economy, boosting employment, and strengthening revenues in the social security system. Among them is a planned increase in minimum insurance thresholds across different professions and sectors, alongside a maximum insured income level set at 2,300 euros.

According to Efremova, this is the first increase in minimum insurance thresholds in a decade. She noted that the measures were discussed with business representatives in advance and described the adjustment as moderate but necessary. “The step is not large. It is necessary and fair, especially for people who will thus have better insurance rights and will receive higher benefits for sick leave and maternity leave or upon retirement,” she said.
