Forecasters say the country could experience its hottest spell on record.

Slovakia is preparing for what forecasters say could be one of the hottest periods ever recorded in the country, with temperatures expected to exceed 40°C for several consecutive days. Authorities are introducing emergency measures to protect public health and transport infrastructure.

On Friday, 26 June, temperatures in Slovakia’s hottest areas rose to 38°C, in line with forecasts. The highest temperature was recorded in Kamenica nad Hronom, north-east Slovakia.

The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ), the country’s national weather service, said exceptionally hot tropical air will continue to spread across Central Europe over the weekend, with the heat expected to peak on Monday ahead of an approaching cold front.

If forecasts prove accurate, Slovakia could record temperatures above 40°C on three consecutive days for the first time since modern weather observations began in 1871. The country’s all-time temperature record of 40.3°C, set in Hurbanovo in July 2007, could also be broken.
