The Indian Institute of Educational Theatre (IIET), in association with Songgadigaru and Aparyaaptha, is presenting “Mehfil–e–Sufiyana”, a unique musical evening that celebrates the timeless spirit of Sufi music and theatre songs. The programme will be held on Sunday at 6 p.m. on the institute premises at Hardwick school campus on JLB Road. Entry is free for all music lovers.Mehfil–E–Sufiyana promises to be much more than a conventional musical concert. The performance will feature compositions based on the verses of great mystic poets and saints such as Kabir, Amir Khusro, Rumi, Sharif, and the Dasa saints, alongside selected theatre songs composed by the legendary theatre maestro B. V. Karanth. The event will not only present these songs, but also introduce audiences to the stories, contexts, and philosophical ideas behind them, creating a deeper appreciation of the music.The repertoire includes compositions in several languages, including Persian, Braj, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Kannada, and other regional languages. Reflecting themes similar to Karnataka’s rich Tatvapada tradition, the songs encourage introspection, spirituality, and self-discovery. As the evening progresses, performers and listeners alike are invited to transcend everyday concerns and immerse themselves in the joy, rhythm, and contemplative essence of music, according to a press release.The programme will be presented by Songgadigaru, a collective of singers and theatre practitioners known for their openness to diverse musical traditions.
