Emergency department head calls situation “extremely serious”

Paris hospitals are coming under increasing strain as France’s heatwave pushes the healthcare system to the brink.

“Hospitals must hold,” French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu insisted on Friday, warning that “pressure on hospitals will continue for several more days.” A new interministerial crisis unit was due to meet later in the day.

“We are reaching a point where the hospital system is running out of capacity to absorb the influx of patients,” Patrice Faure, the Paris police prefect, said, stressing that “the number of hospital admissions continues to rise.”

“My duty is to ensure that the system does not become overwhelmed,” he continued, adding that the critical threshold “has not been exceeded.”
