Liberty Group South Africa is marking Youth Month by encouraging the public to walk for a cause, with every kilometre completed at Sandton City Mall translating into a pair of school shoes for a child in need.
An estimated 10.1 million of South Africa's roughly 17 million schoolchildren walk to school every day, while about 7 million have never owned a pair of school shoes.
Although not all of these learners walk barefoot, millions of children, particularly in rural communities, make the journey to school without proper footwear.
To mark Youth Month, Liberty Group South Africa is continuing its drive to provide school shoes to disadvantaged learners. The initiative has already distributed more than 100,000 pairs of school shoes, but the company says millions of children still need support.
Liberty said a pair of school shoes represents dignity and can make a meaningful difference in a child's daily school experience.
