“I approach jewellery and furniture from the same point of view,” says Lara Bohinc. “For me, it’s just a question of scale.” The Slovenian-born designer, who created jewellery for Cartier for 10 years, shifted her focus to furniture in 2016, when she founded Bohinc Studio. An intricacy still prevails across pieces such as the Saturn chair (€7,080) and pouffe (€4,680). Made in steel and wool bouclé, they draw on the “split sphere” of Bohinc’s Sun and Moon (2007) and Solaris (2012) jewellery. Her Planetaria collection rethinks her orb-shaped quartz crystal rings, necklaces and earrings as glass and metal lighting (from €2,280). Most recently, she has focused on ceramics: vessels that are folded, crystallised and currently on show at Palazzo Mora in Venice.
In successfully translating her jewellery nous into interior pieces, Bohinc is part of a wave of designers that ranges from Iranian jeweller Elaheh Ganji, whose pieces include a candelabra made from matchsticks (£2,900), to Mexico-based Alana Burns, whose metal and waxwork lamps, jugs and dishes (from $450) mine the same poetic motifs as her jewellery.
