Restaurant reviewer Gary Hanna had been hoping to set the record straight on St. George’s Plaice in Llandudno, which has attracted some brutal reviews from the public – but he was disappointed13:32, 26 Jun 2026St. George’s Plaice is considered by many to be the worst fish and chip shop in the UK. Reviews on Tripadvisor for the Llandudno chippy are consistently awful, despite the restaurant's glorious location. Customers complain of poor-quality food, high prices and, in one or two cases, food-poisoning.But intrepid YouTube restaurant reviewer Gary Hanna decided to check it out for himself, hoping that the 1.6 out of five Tripadvisor verdict had been too harsh, or that perhaps the owners had decided to make a bit more effort in the light of such savage reviews.Indeed, Gary’s first impression was quite favourable. It’s undeniably a beautiful part of the world, and the owners had quite sensibly shielded diners from Llandudno’s sizeable squadron of cheeky seagulls. But things went downhill fast, with the employee behind the counter reciting a long list of chip shop basics that St. George’s Plaice had apparently run out of. So, he explains on his GaryEats YouTube channel, Gary ended up with a portion of pollock and chips accompanied by a sausage and some pots of mushy peas and curry sauce. His first chip was promising enough, and Gary began to think that the Tripadvisor reviewers had been too harsh. But then things took a dramatic turn for the worse. To describe the pollock as greasy, Gary said, would be an understatement. The batter was largely a hollow shell: “It's lacking in any quantity of fish whatsoever,” he said. And when he did find some slivers of pollock hiding inside the batter, he almost wished he didn’t.He added: “The pollock is really mushy. That is rather unpleasant.” Gary told the expectant throng of seagulls that they would probably regret it if he did give them some of his fish and chips.Gary’s piece of pollock cost him £9.95. He had paid for a medium portion but had been given a “large” piece for the medium price, although it wasn’t particularly big. The chips were £3.95 and the sausage £4.45. The small tubs of curry sauce and mushy peas, which Gary thought were “disgraceful”, set him back £2.25 each.Gary said he could "understand" the low Tripadvisor rating, adding: "The effort that's gone in there is borderline zero.”The quality of produce was another issue, with Gary’s £4.50 sausage being merely a standard catering-grade offering: “That’s a disaster as well. That is not a nice sausage. It's just one of your commercial industrial ones … £4.50 for a sausage? You’re having a bubble, mate.”Pointing at a nearby sign, Gary added: “It says here ‘Do not feed the seagulls.’ They're trying to keep them alive.”Unfortunately, while Gary was looking around for something to wipe his greasy gingers on, one particularly cheeky seagull swooped in and waddled off triumphantly with the remainder of the sausage. The mushy peas were singularly unimpressive too, with Gary branding them “sour” while he called the curry sauce thin and flavourless. It was at that point that Gary decided to return to St. George’s Plaice and demand a refund – leading to the most telling exchange of the whole experience. After re-wrapping his disappointing meal, Gary went back into the shop and said: “I’ve got to hand that back to you. That is the worst fish and chips known to mankind. That was shocking.“The pollock is absolutely vile,” he added. “Look at it. It's just mush. It's awful.”After half-heartedly trying to persuade him that pollock is always that bad, the woman behind the counter offered Gary a refund, explaining that she was grateful that he had been so polite about it: “Normally, we just have people coming in and just throwing it back at us.”Article continues belowAs Gary points out, if people are “normally” demanding a refund, there’s something deeply wrong: “I'm definitely not the first person that's gone back in and said ‘That's not good enough.'“I don’t think she meant to say that,” he added. “What you need to be doing in there, St. George's Plaice, you need to massively improve. I don't know who owns the shop, but you’ve got two young people working there, and you know, it must be awful for them.”St. George’s Plaice has been contacted for a response.
