A legislative amendment introduced by Interior Minister Thodoris Livanios paves the way for municipalities to collect local fees directly, instead of through electricity bills.
The bill is due to be put to a vote in Parliament later Friday after the conclusion of plenary debate.
Addressing lawmakers, Livanios said the amendment provides for the issuance of a Presidential Decree, subject to the agreement of KEDE, Greece’s Union of Municipalities and Communities, and the relevant ministries, to establish a new system for collecting municipal fees independently of electricity suppliers.
He said the measure creates the legal framework for separating municipal charges from electricity bills in the future, responding to a long-standing request from electricity providers, the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO), and municipalities.
