Worrying about her young child in the heatwave, Social News Assistant Editor thought of clever way to avoid the heat for a good night's sleep, that's been described as 'the ultimate hack'12:21, 26 Jun 2026UK weather: Cheeky way to deal with heatwave temperatures Most people in Britain have been dealing with the heat this week, with the UK experiencing temperatures of up to 36.7 degrees. This blistering peak occurred as a heatwave shattered the UK's all-time June temperature record multiple times in a matter of days. As well as suffering in the day, many Brits have been struggling to sleep at night because the temperature in their bedrooms are just too hot.‌That was me on Wednesday (June 24) night when the temperature in my bedroom and my little boy's bedroom was a whopping 30 degrees. With him sweating buckets, I – like a lot of parents probably have been this week – was left worried about him as I didn't want him to overheat.‌‌However, with only a pretty rubbish fan to hand, I didn't know what to do.A quick Google of air con machines showed me that a good one was around £500, and even if I had that money for that, most of them were sold out.Awake and worrying what to do, I was browsing Facebook on my phone when I noticed a cafe advertising that they had air con.‌It then occurred to me that we could just stay in somewhere with air con too for the night, as the same temperatures had been forecast for the Thursday (June 25) also.‌After a quick Google, I discovered that The Village Hotel, which is right near me in Portsmouth, had air con and rooms available. So, before I had even thought about it that much, I booked us in for the Thursday night to make sure my 3-year-old had a comfortable night's sleep.I appreciate that not everyone can afford a hotel out of the blue, but considering people are spending hundreds on fans or air con units and then finding out they don't really work that well, securing yourself a hotel room for the night with air con is definitely a guaranteed way to make sure you're cool in an extreme weather.‌Obviously, in future, I'd hope to be more prepared with a better air con unit that I think I may have to invest in now. However, for a quick fix solution, the hotel stay was amazing. As well as staying there for the night, I also enjoyed a visit to the pool and used the steam room and hot tub facilities and because I work from home, I was able to work from there for a few days in the air conditioning too.The particular hotel I stayed at also has a number of Summer Price Drop deals on at the moment, which made our stay even cheaper.‌Content cannot be displayed without consentHonestly, just seeing my little boy enjoying a comfortable night's sleep again was priceless for me, as I'm sure most parents agree that it's horrible when we're worrying about the health and wellbeing of our kids, even if it's just for a few nights. After sharing my hotel stay with my friends on Instagram, I was quickly inundated with messages from friends exclaiming what a good idea it was, with some admitting they hadn't thought of doing that in the heat.Article continues belowOne pal even called it the "ultimate heatwave hack", which I've used as the inspiration for this article.Obviously, as stated above, it isn't a long-term solution, but if you're in need of a cool, peaceful night in a hurry, I definitely recommend it!
