Civil society organisations accused the government of not doing enough regarding the ongoing anti-migrant hostility and xenophobic violence.
A coalition of more than 160 civil society organisations has accused the government of failing to respond strongly enough to the growing crisis of xenophobic violence, forced removals, intimidation, and displacement of migrants across the country.
The Siyafana Sonke Action Campaign met with representatives from the Presidency and the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster on Thursday evening, where it demanded urgent intervention ahead of the June 30 deadline being pushed by anti-migrant groups.
The campaign said the meeting exposed what it described as a "woefully inadequate" state response, particularly on the humanitarian crisis facing migrants who have fled their homes in fear of violence.
The meeting was attended by a national delegation from Siyafana Sonke coalition members, led by activist Mametlwe Sebei, and representatives from the departments of Justice and Constitutional Development, Home Affairs, Education, Defence and Military Veterans, and Labour.
