Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said on Friday, June 26, that the memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington includes access for IAEA inspectors to Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Speaking at a press conference in Japan, Grossi said an agreement exists between the two sides, but its implementation would require the Agency to be allowed into Iran to carry out inspections. He added that he hopes IAEA inspectors will be able to enter the country soon.

Grossi also said that ensuring Iran’s nuclear programme is not diverted towards the production of nuclear weapons would require a “very robust” verification system.

His remarks come after Iranian officials had earlier stated that access for IAEA inspectors to certain key nuclear sites would not be possible until an agreement with the United States is finalised and sanctions are lifted.
