There's an abundance available on shop shelves, featuring some well-known names like Heinz and Hellmann's.‌However, supermarkets also stock their own-label mayonnaise options, frequently at a significantly lower cost. To determine which mayonnaise boasted the finest flavour and consistency, Which? subjected seven supermarket own-label products to rigorous testing. This encompassed Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco alongside Heinz and Hellmann's.‌Coming in last place was M&S' Classic Mayo at £1.40 for a 500ml bottle. In the penultimate position came Heinz' Seriously Good Mayonnaise, commanding a hefty £2.84 for a 540ml bottle.‌Following that was Morrisons at 95p per 500ml bottle. Testers discovered it was dark in appearance and a "bit bland" in taste, though they appreciated its creamy thickness. After Morrisons, Tesco was at 85p per 450ml bottle. Which? said: "Our tasters thought it had a pleasing thickness, creaminess and colour. Nearly half enjoyed its flavour, but a similar proportion deemed it overly tangy."Next up was Asda's own-label mayonnaise at 96p per 500ml bottle. The testers reported they valued the colour, creaminess, and consistency, though some deemed the flavour insufficiently robust.‌In fourth spot came Lidl's Batts mayonnaise at 95p per 500ml bottle. Which? said: "A fraction cheaper than Sainsbury's, Lidl's mayo matched Hellmann's in our taste testers' estimation."Most were satisfied with the thickness and creaminess. Some tasters found it a little bland, and said a stronger flavour and extra tartness would have suited them."‌As for Hellmann's, which retails at £2.45 for a 430ml bottle, some adored its taste, while others found it too mild. Nevertheless, it triumphed over Heinz in the clash of the leading brands.Claiming second spot was Sainsbury's mayo at £1 per 500ml bottle. More than two-thirds of the testers appreciated this mayonnaise's consistency, and over half were pleased with its strength, flavour and sharpness.Taking the top position was Co-op's On The Side Real Mayonnaise, priced at £1.35 for 500ml. Which?‌said: "An appetising-looking, creamy mayo with a flavour that most of our tasters enjoyed."Two-thirds felt the consistency was spot on, and the majority loved its tanginess. While it's the most expensive of the supermarket offerings, it remains less than half the cost of the major brands.Which? said: "Two supermarket mayonnaises were top of our taste test this year. Of the two brands on test, Hellmann's was more popular than Heinz.Article continues below"We didn't test Aldi's own-brand mayo as the supermarket told us its mayonnaise range was due to undergo some changes.
