It is alleged that the municipality was acting on a complaint from a family living opposite the park, citing the non-maintenance of the park as a problem.
FOLLOWING a petition from the Hindu community, eThekwini Municipality has confirmed that it will not demolish a sacred puthu at a public park, in Buffelsbosch, clarifying that only an unauthorised structure will be removed.
President of the South African Hindu Dharma Sabha, Ram Maharaj, said they had written to the municipality after concerns were raised by devotees of the Shallcross and Districts Hindu Dharma Sabha and the Buffelsbosch Hindu Dharma Sabha.
“We received complaints from Hindu residents from Buffelsbosch who were deeply concerned about an alleged instruction from the eThekwini’s Parks and Recreation Department to demolish a sacred puthu formation near the entrance of the Buffelsbosch Park, by June 18.
“There is a further allegation of a threat of destruction of the puthu by law enforcement agencies if members of the Buffelsbosch Shri Mariammman Gramadevi Temple failed to destroy it.
