Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann was furious after his side went down to Ecuador.

Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann accused his players of committing "tactical suicide" after Ecuador came from behind to stun the Fifa World Cup Group E winners 2-1.

Leroy Sané had given the structural table-toppers a perfect start by netting after just two minutes, but Nilson Angulo equalised seven minutes later. With Ecuador chasing a place in the knockout phase, they looked the hungrier outfit, and Gonzalo Plata secured a priceless winner in the 77th minute to seal third place and safe passage into the next round.

"We got off to a great start," Nagelsmann said after the final whistle. "Unfortunately, right after scoring, we started committing tactical suicide with our positioning. That makes things difficult."

"Ecuador had everything to play for, and you could tell — they had their foot on the gas. But I also can't say that any of my players didn't give it their all. That's too simplistic."
