The University of Venda has been rocked by allegations of serious governance failures.
A whistleblower dossier, supported in part by internal university documents reviewed by IOL, has raised serious questions about governance, procurement and financial oversight at the University of Venda (UNIVEN), prompting an independent forensic investigation into allegations involving one of South Africa's public universities.
The allegations centre on a major construction project whose cost increased from an approved budget of R64 million to a projected R163.2 million, as well as claims of irregular appointments, conflicts of interest and the concentration of decision-making authority among a small group of senior officials and external advisers.
The documents reviewed by IOL do not establish criminal wrongdoing, nor do they prove the guilt of any individual named in the allegations. However, they corroborate key aspects of the whistleblower's claims relating to governance failures, procurement controls and financial oversight.
The allegations are contained in an anonymous letter sent in April 2026 to the Minister of Higher Education and the chairperson of the University Council. The author, who identifies themselves as a long-serving university employee, claims a climate of fear and intimidation has discouraged staff from raising concerns for years.
