Bayern Munich have reached an agreement in principle to sign defender Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt. The Athletic reported in June that the 23-year-old was committed to joining Bayern and was waiting on the German champions to reach an agreement with Frankfurt. The left-back also attracted interest from Arsenal.Brown started Germany’s first two World Cup games before being left on the bench for Thursday’s 2-1 defeat by Ecuador.Brown joined Frankfurt from Nurnberg in January 2024 and has made 75 appearances for the club, providing seven goals and 13 assists. He made 42 appearances across all competitions during the 2025-26 campaign, adding four goals and six assists, and was named the club’s player of the season. The Germany international’s Frankfurt contract runs until 2029.Brown made his senior Germany debut in October 2025 and was named in Julian Nagelsmann’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, scoring during his side’s 7-1 win over Curacao in their group-stage opener.Alphonso Davies is traditionally Bayern Munich’s first-choice left-back, but the past two seasons of his career have been disrupted by injury. What will Brown bring to Bayern?Bayern are set to sign a player who seems perfect for head coach Vincent Kompany.Brown is versatile. He plays primarily as a left-back, but can also play further forward, as well as, if need be, on the right side of defence. His technical ability on the ball has been a great asset for Julian Nagelsmann’s national side, for whom he is currently first choice, and will likely prove a similar virtue for Bayern, whose possession-based style and positional fluidity he should easily adapt to.Is he the difference between reaching a Champions League semi-final and winning the competition? It’s hard to say, but as a standout performer already and with plenty of potential still to realise, Brown unquestionably makes Bayern’s first team better and their squad deeper. His signing hardly hurts. The next question is what this means for Alphonso Davies, the Canadian international full-back. Davies is a first-choice when fit and has had a successful Bayern career, but he has suffered a succession of injuries over recent seasons and has become difficult to depend upon.He has featured in only 32 Bundesliga games over the last two seasons combined, and while part of Canada’s national team squad at the current World Cup, he is yet to appear in a game as he fights to recover from a hamstring injury sustained during the Champions League semi-final defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.Jun 25, 2026Connections: Sports EditionSpot the pattern.
