TORONTO — The Maple Leafs apparently aren’t content on just making the No. 1 pick in Friday’s draft. In an intriguing media availability that followed the official introduction of Jim Hiller as head coach on Thursday afternoon, GM John Chayka revealed that the team has explored the possibility of adding a second pick in the top 10.“We’ve had discussions on every pick in the top 10 outside of (our own),” Chayka said. The Leafs GM said the thought of owning two top-10 selections was “compelling,” but “there’s a cost to that and it’s not something that we’d be willing to do” unless they were certain it was the right move. Are the Sharks why the Blackhawks traded for Bowen Byram?Corey Pronman, Scott Wheeler and more“But we have explored that and understand it,” added Chayka. “If you can add two players from the same age group in that part of that draft, as a premise that’s interesting.”The Chicago Blackhawks dealt the No. 4 pick earlier in the week and the San Jose Sharks have been open about their willingness to consider a move with the No. 2 selection. That the Leafs would be interested in acquiring another pick on top of No. 1 is, well, fascinating.Adding not one teenager but two to next season’s roster (would both play in the NHL in such a scenario?) would seem to run counter to the team’s apparent efforts to keep Auston Matthews happy, retool this offseason and make the playoffs once again in 2027 — especially since such a move would presumably cost 23-year-old Matthew Knies among other goodies. It would be a move that better aligns with a club that is trying to rebuild.
