This is how South Africans can use electricity more efficiently.

As municipal electricity tariff increases take effect from July 1 and strain our pockets further, households and businesses across South Africa are being urged to rethink how they use power.

Electricity prices continue to climb, with Eskom confirming an average 8.76% increase for direct customers from April 2026, while municipal tariff adjustments are rolling out from July and vary by locality.

The increases come at a time when household budgets are tight, with rising costs across food, transport, and utilities continuing to use up disposable income.

According to Stats SA’s latest Income and Expenditure Survey, average annual household income stood at R204,359 in 2023, while essential categories such as housing, utilities, food, transport, insurance and financial services accounted for roughly three-quarters of total household spending.
