Amnesty International said the DNA result finally confirmed the identity of Onifade, a 20-year-old student journalist who disappeared while covering protests in Lagos at the height of the nationwide demonstrations against police brutality.
Global human rights organisation, the Amnesty International Nigeria, has said the confirmation through a DNA test that a previously unidentified body was that of slain journalist Pelumi Onifade further exposes what it described as the “horrifying level of violence” unleashed on protesters and journalists during the October 2020 #EndSARS demonstrations.
In a statement posted on its X handle on Thursday, Amnesty International said the DNA result finally confirmed the identity of Onifade, a 20-year-old student journalist who disappeared while covering protests in Lagos at the height of the nationwide demonstrations against police brutality.
According to the organisation, Onifade was allegedly shot and killed by police officers attached to the Lagos State Task Force on October 24, 2020.
Amnesty stated that after he was shot, his body was allegedly taken away by security operatives and later dumped at the mortuary of the General Hospital in Ikorodu, Lagos.
