Amid the ongoing suspension of open parliamentary sessions and mounting criticism over lawmakers being sidelined from macro-level decision-making processes, a group of representatives and factions close to the regime has demanded the passage of laws that would treat any threat against the Leader of the Islamic Republic as tantamount to a “declaration of war.”

Concurrently, a campaign titled “Petition for a Triple-Urgency Bill on Combating Threats Against the Leader” was launched on June 21, accumulating tens of thousands of signatures so far. The signatories of this campaign are demanding the ratification of a law under which any threat or assassination attempt directed at the life of the Leader of the Islamic Republic would be categorized as an act of war, granting the Islamic Republic the right to launch extensive retaliatory measures against the threatening state or actor.

The text of the petition even proposes that, in the event of a threat against the Leader, Iran should withdraw from international agreements and obligations, pressure governments linked to the threat, and halt any negotiations or agreements with them until the suspects are extradited, a formal apology is issued, and reparations are paid.
