Former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov

Former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov has sharply criticized Bulgaria’s draft 2026 state budget, describing it as a policy direction that sacrifices long-term stability for short-term political convenience.

In a commentary published on his Facebook profile, Gyurov argued that the proposal reflects a governing approach focused on increased current spending while pushing structural problems into the future. He said the result is a “well-known scheme” that produces immediate political comfort but leads to deeper fiscal challenges later on.

He warned that the budget’s design carries inflationary risks, adding that lower-income groups would bear the heaviest burden if such pressures materialize. According to him, the proposed framework lacks measures aimed at modernizing the state apparatus or improving economic efficiency.

Gyurov also pointed to what he described as a missing reform agenda, noting the absence of steps to streamline public administration, reduce inefficient expenditure, or strengthen the business environment. He said the current approach avoids difficult reforms early in the mandate, choosing instead to delay them in favor of short-term popularity.
