Finance Minister Galab Donev has defended the 2026 state budget, describing it as a realistic reflection of Bulgaria’s public finances after years of accumulated obligations and unresolved structural issues.
Speaking on bTV’s “120 Minutes,” Donev said the document does not conceal financial difficulties but instead brings them into the open, aiming to lay the groundwork for gradual fiscal stabilization.
According to him, the budget exposes previously unaccounted commitments and overdue payments, while also setting conditions for restoring long-term financial order.
"All the numbers, what was hidden over the years, that is why it looks this way and it should open the door to normality in the state. It can only be corrected with measures on the revenue side or measures limiting the expenditure side, but the measures that are applied on the expenditure side should not be abrupt and lead to shock changes in income," he said.
