Mpumulwane Primary School principal Sithembiso Khumalo broke down in tears after the Durban High Court sentenced him to life imprisonment for the murder of Durban Metro Police officer Captain Zwelakhe Ntombela.

Handing down sentence on Wednesday, Judge Bruce Bedderson delivered a scathing rebuke of Khumalo, saying he had only himself to blame for his downfall.

The judge questioned why a respected school principal earning a stable income would become involved in such a serious crime.

"You are the one who ruined your life," Bedderson said, describing Khumalo's actions as motivated by greed despite the financial security enjoyed by his household, where both he and his wife were employed as educators.
