Bafana Bafana are headed for the biggest payday in South African football history after reaching the round of 32 at the World Cup.

Bafana Bafana's place in the Fifa World Cup round of 32 has not only delivered one of the country's greatest football achievements, but also guaranteed a sizeable financial reward.

Fifa confirmed ahead of the tournament that teams eliminated in the round of 32 will receive prize money of $11m (about R182m), while all 48 participating nations also received a $2.5m preparation grant.

Having progressed from Group A after a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Korea, South Africa are now guaranteed at least $23.5m (about R390m) from their World Cup campaign, comprising Fifa's $10m participation payment, a $2.5m preparation grant and the $11m awarded to teams eliminated in the round of 32.

The financial rewards become even more substantial if Hugo Broos' men can overcome co-hosts Canada in their round-of-32 clash on June 28.
