June 25 (UPI) -- The Chicago Cubs agreed to trade minor league infielder Cole Mathis to the New York Mets in exchange for left-handed pitcher David Peterson.

Sources told ESPN, The Athletic and MLB.com about the agreement Wednesday night.

Peterson, 30, went 3-6 with a 6.09 ERA through his first 16 appearances this season. He went 9-6 with a 4.22 ERA over 30 starts in 2025, when he earned his first All-Star selection. Peterson owns a career ERA of 4.31 over 147 appearances.

Peterson is set to hit free agency next off-season.
