Royal Care Hospitals in Coimbatore has successfully performed a heart transplant on a seven-year-old boy suffering from end-stage heart failure caused by Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM), according to a press release. The release said the child was brought to the hospital after treatment elsewhere failed to improve his condition. He was admitted with severe heart failure and placed on ventilator support. Despite intensive medical care, his condition worsened, leading to kidney dysfunction and multiple organ complications.According to Dr. G. Pradeep, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon, the boy was subsequently placed on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), an advanced heart-lung support system. During treatment, he also developed a severe infection and collapse of the right lung. The release said that after a prolonged wait, a heart from an adult brain-dead donor became available. Doctors proceeded with the transplant despite the challenges posed by the size mismatch between the donor heart and the child.Following the surgery, the boy required prolonged ECMO support and intensive post-operative care. He gradually recovered over the following weeks and has since resumed normal activities with improved heart and lung function, the release added. Published - June 25, 2026 06:15 pm IST
