More than three decades after a group of young anti-apartheid recruits disappeared, a former apartheid Askari has appeared in court on 15 murder charges linked to three notorious operations investigated by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

The 74-year-old suspect appeared before the Benoni Regional Court on Thursday following an extensive Hawks investigation into apartheid-era atrocities.

According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, the court appearance forms part of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation's ongoing efforts to pursue accountability for crimes committed during apartheid.

"In its ongoing pursuit of accountability for apartheid-era atrocities, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) continues to fulfil its mandate," said Mogale.

The investigation, conducted by the Serious Organised Crime Investigation's Crimes Against the State section, stems from three matters that were brought before the TRC.
