The family of former Zambian president Edgar Chagwa Lungu has won a crucial court battle in South Africa, but the mystery surrounding his burial continues, with no confirmation yet on where or when he will be laid to rest more than a year after his death.

Lungu died in Pretoria on June 5, 2025, sparking a bitter legal battle between his family and the Zambian government over who should determine his final resting place. While South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal has now ruled in favour of the family, questions over where and when the former president will be buried remain unanswered.

In response to questions from The Star, family spokesperson Makebi Zulu said consultations were still under way and no final decision had been taken.

"At this stage, the family is engaged in internal consultations and has not yet reached a final decision regarding the burial site. Out of respect for the solemnity of the process, any decision regarding the final resting place of President Lungu will be communicated to the public once consultations have been concluded and the family is ready to make an announcement."

Zulu said the family was still considering the practical and logistical arrangements following the court ruling and had not yet finalised a burial date.
