A new hospital rising in Komotini is being embraced locally not simply as a healthcare facility but as a catalyst for change in Thrace.
“For us, the new general hospital of Komotini is much more than a building. It is a vision,” said hospital administrator Elena Rofaela, describing hopes for organizational renewal, investment in people and greater social cohesion.
The Komotini project is one of three hospitals being built by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and donated to the Greek state, alongside a pediatric hospital in Thessaloniki and a general hospital in Sparta.
Designed by architect Renzo Piano’s team, the facilities prioritize light, simplicity and healing-centered architecture. In Komotini, extensive green space, renewable-energy systems and naturally lit operating rooms form part of the design.
The hospital will include 140 beds and Thrace’s first inpatient mental-health unit.
