Hout Bay community activist Roscoe Jacobs has raised concerns over the City of Cape Town's proposed 50% increase in MyCiTi monthly pass fares, saying it could place additional pressure on working-class commuters.

Hout Bay community activist Roscoe Jacobs has condemned the City of Cape Town's proposed 50% increase in the MyCiTi monthly pass, which would raise the fare from R1 000 to R1 500.

Jacobs argues that this significant hike would impose an unfair financial burden on working-class residents who depend on public transport for their daily commutes.

The petition was launched in response to information released by the City of Cape Town regarding proposed fare adjustments that form part of its draft 2026/27 budget.

As of Wednesday, June 24, the petition had garnered 4660 of the 5000 signatures needed to reach its initial target.
