The Central Crime Branch (CCB) police have arrested a man from Ariyalur for allegedly cheating a Chennai resident of nearly ₹23 lakh by falsely promising to secure a government job for his son in the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC).According to the police, the complainant, S. Srinivasan, 65, of MGR Nagar, Chennai, alleged that Ilanchezhiyan, 66, of Ariyalur claimed to have close connections with former Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar and assured him that he could secure an Assistant Engineer post for Srinivasan’s son in the MTC.Believing the promise, Srinivasan reportedly paid around ₹23 lakh in multiple instalments between 2023 and 2025. However, the accused allegedly neither secured the job nor returned the money.Based on the complaint, the Job Fraud Investigation Wing of the Central Crime Branch registered a case and launched an investigation. A special team conducted an intensive search and traced the absconding accused. Ilanchezhiyan was arrested in Erode on Wednesday (June 24, 2026).During the arrest, police seized two identity cards purportedly identifying him as a “District Educational Officer” and “P.E.T.” official.The police said they suspect the accused may have cheated several other individuals using similar promises and are continuing their investigation.
