Dear Editor,
I was listening with interest regarding the proposal for mandatory drug testing of Members of Parliament, which was debated in Parliament involving former Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa, Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt, and Speaker Auapaau Mulipola Aloitafua.
In my humble view, no reasonable citizen would oppose efforts to combat the growing drug problem in Samoa and should be supported at all costs to safeguard our younger generations. Those entrusted with public office should be held to higher standards of integrity and accountability to ensure public trust in our leaders. However, good intentions must and shall be supported by law, due process, and constitutional principles.
The Speaker has announced plans for drug testing of all Members of Parliament, while the Prime Minister has previously advocated for mandatory testing across government Ministries, including Members of Parliament. Nevertheless, fundamental questions remain unanswered and should be addressed before any mandatory drug testing is forced on Members of Parliament.
1.Where is the law authorising mandatory drug testing of elected representatives?
