The University of Johannesburg has claimed the top sustainability ranking in Africa and South Africa, strengthening its growing global reputation after recently breaking into the QS world top 300.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has been ranked the leading university in South Africa and Africa for sustainability impact, while also securing a place among the world's top 40 institutions in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings.

The rankings, released on Wednesday, placed UJ 39th globally out of more than 1,600 universities assessed on their contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The achievement adds to a string of recent international successes for the university. Earlier this month, UJ broke into the global top 300 of the QS World University Rankings for the first time, climbing to 292nd position, while also rising to 281st in the latest US News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings.

UJ vice-chancellor and principal, Letlhokwa Mpedi, said the latest recognition reflected the institution's commitment to addressing societal challenges through teaching, research and innovation.
