The University of Cape Town (UCT) has once again secured its position as Africa's leading university.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has once again secured its position as Africa's leading university, while improving its standing in the latest 2026–2027 US News Best Global Universities Rankings.

In the rankings released on June 17, UCT ascended to 122nd globally from last year's 124th position, securing a spot within the top 5% of the 2,250 universities evaluated around the world.

The achievement reinforces UCT's reputation as one of the continent's most influential research institutions and highlights South Africa's continued contribution to global scientific and academic research.

Unlike rankings that focus on employability, student experience or sustainability, the US News Best Global Universities Rankings primarily assess research performance, academic reputation, publications, citations and international research collaboration.
