Sir, – It has been announced that the Government has handed over the General Post Office (GPO) in Dublin to the Office of Public Works (OPW) for redevelopment at a cost of between €200 million and €500 million. (“GPO to host community events pending a ‘national conversation’ on its future,” June 22nd)The GPO will be used as office space while a public consultation exercise takes place, which will no doubt be followed by a controversy, a review and of course a series of further reviews and consultations. Bearing in mind the Government’s track record (children’s hospital, etc) and the OPW’s (bicycle sheds, etc), it is inconceivable that the project will be delivered either on time or within budget.Therefore the Government should immediately reverse this decision and hire some competent organisation or individual to deliver this project under a legally binding and watertight contract as happens in other areas and jurisdictions.If they don’t then the Irish taxpayer can look forward to years of endless delays and large overspending. – Yours, etc,HUGH PIERCE,Celbridge, Co Kildare.
