Fittingly, on the day of Midsummer, British bespoke carmaker Morgan has unveiled its new ultra-exclusive model carrying the solstice name - and it's as red hot as the UK's soaring temperatures. This is the second Midsummer model from the Malvern-based manufacturer, following in the tyre tracks of the limited-run Midsummer Speedster debuted last year. But while the open-top version was available in 50 units and priced in excess of £200,000, the Coupé takes rarity to another level.Only 10 examples will be made, each with a stunning glass roof. And, given its incredible looks, Morgan expects it to sell out quickly. The retro design has been penned in collaboration with legendary design house Pininfarina. It promises 'dramatically different proportions, greater visual tension and a more resolved silhouette' compared with performance cars we're used to seeing in showrooms today.Under its expansive bonnet is a BMW turbocharged straight-six petrol engine producing 402bhp, sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. But the small-scale manufacturer says the Coupé has been 'conceived with touring in mind' and will provide customers with 'year-round usability, luggage practicality and long-distance comfort, with the sense of occasion that defined the original Midsummer'. Morgan's new Midsummer Coupe is the Malvern carmakers latest ultra-exclusive model that's fittingly been unveiled on the longest day of the year - and the hottest tooThe Midsummer Coupé shares its platform with the Supersport range, including the recently unveiled 400 - the company's most powerful road-legal car to date. But to create its cab-back stance and pre-World War II looks with a glass roof, Morgan says it 'required significant structural development, including billet-machined aluminium A-pillars, bonded structural glazing and stressed-skin construction'.Even with the addition of a glazed ceiling, advanced engineering techniques combined with lightweight materials mean the hard-top Midsummer weighs just 2.5 per cent more than the featherweight Supersport, tipping the scales at around 1,200kg.That means it weighs roughly the same as a Ford Fiesta but is four times as potent. But the Coupé isn't simply a Midsummer Speedster with a fancy roof panel to keep your hair dry.
